Camp shirts have become one of my favorite style staple of mine in recent months. Inspired by the style evolution of a recent client and the nostalgia of my dad’s tropical vacation shirts, they are a fun summer addition that can add a bit of kick to any wardrobe.
Camp shirts are typically short-sleeved and have a loose, boxy fit. They often have a straight hem and are most flattering when worn untucked, which gives it some great relaxation vibrations. The shirts are usually made from lightweight and breathable fabrics, making them luxuriously comfortable and well-suited for the sweltering hotter months. They're designed to be low maintenance and move with you which is why they are commonly associated with vacation spots, resorts, camping trips and thanks to a recent outing with a client – my wardrobe.
There is no one right way to camp shirt. Camp shirts can vary widely, ranging from solid colors to bold patterns and prints. Hawaiian shirts are a well-known subset of camp shirts, but camp shirts can also feature other patterns like stripes, abstract motifs, or even more subdued designs.
Styling a camp shirt is all about embracing its relaxed and boxy silhouette while bringing a bit of structure and balance. Whether your style goals include having a laid-back look or a sophisticated ensemble, the camp shirt won’t disappoint.
Camp Elevate
For an effortless and elevated look, pair your camp shirt with a pair of wide-legged high-rise pants. Tuck the shirt in to create a bit of polish and highlight the waistline. Roll up the sleeves for an added touch of style. Complete the look with a pair of sling back sandals and platforms, and the next time your papa sees you he may just want to steal your beloved camp shirt. The camp shirt is a malleable and adaptive staple - with just a simple tuck, the boxy silhhoette transitions from relaxed to fitted.
Camp Resort Chic
Evolve your camp shirt game by opting for a well-fitting pair of straight jeans or lightweight cotton pants. Tuck in the front of the shirt and let the back hang loose for a stylishly asymmetrical look. Or go for a simple asymmetrical front tuck, by tucking in one front hem and keep the rest of the shirt untucked. Add a belt and some leather loafers to add a touch of sophistication. This ensemble is great for a lazy Saturday or a relaxed dinner with your favorite human.
Camp Layered Adventure
For those slightly chilly days or cooler evenings, try layering your camp shirt over a plain tee or body suit. Leave the shirt unbuttoned and the tee slightly visible for a laid-back, layered effect. Combine this with your favorite slim jeans and a pair of sandals. This combination adds an extra dose of style without sacrificing comfort.
Bring Your Camp Shirt To Camp
As we’ve journeyed through the world of styling camp shirts, it's clear that these boxy vacation staples are gateways to a bit of style adventure. From the rugged charm of flannel to the playful burst of tropical and abstract designs, camp shirts let you declare your allegiance to the world of adventure while keeping you comfortable and polished in the process.
These outfits have so much versatility! There's always a period of awkwardness when the season changes from summer to fall and I am completely lost on what to wear. I want to hold onto color and fun but have more structure for the fall. Perfect mix!
I've tried a top like this but never got it right with sizing. I want to feel top to look flowing and drapey but I tend to do it and it gets oversized. How did you end up sizing?
I haven't seen patterns like this ever! So loud and fun!
Where are these camp shirts from? They are so fun and colorful! Appreciate how you highlighted the versatility of them. Now I need some!
