It's Tee Time: 3 Tees For The Summer

If it's offbeat with a splash of edge and a tinge of zany, it has historically found an eternal home in my closet.

At its best, style is about alignment. It's about bringing what feels true internally into the external world - sometimes quietly, sometimes boldly, and sometimes in a way that makes strangers wonder what exactly compelled you to buy that sequined vest in the first place.

Lately, though, what has floated to the very top of my priority list is rest.

I crave a slower pace and the simple pleasure of staring at the ceiling or an overgrown maple tree for hours on end. No urgency. No to-do lists. No optimizing. Just rest and, perhaps, a burrito.

It makes sense, then, that my wardrobe has shifted alongside me.

The human who delights in the unusual hasn't disappeared entirely. But in this season of life, I've found myself reaching for something much simpler: soft, 100 percent cotton tees with generous give, easy silhouettes, and the kind of comfort that asks absolutely nothing of me.

Tee #1: Imogene + Willie

I am, admittedly, a sucker for a well-intentioned pun, so The Black Magic Tee had me at hello.

There isn't much actual magic to report here - unless you count the ability to throw something on repeatedly without ever feeling like it's a compromise.

A good black tee possesses a sort of quiet sorcery. It offers the ease of your favorite t-shirt while carrying just a bit more presence. The saturated black gives it a touch of edge, the structured crewneck lends polish, and the silhouette strikes that elusive middle ground: relaxed without looking sloppy, easy without appearing like you've entirely given up.

It's the kind of piece that works with whatever version of yourself shows up that day.

Half-tucked into vintage denim with sandals and a tote for a Saturday spent wandering. Paired with linen trousers when you want comfort without sacrificing intention. Layered under a blazer when circumstances require you to look like someone who has a color-coded calendar and a five-year plan.

What I appreciate most, though, is that it doesn't ask much of you. It doesn't require statement jewelry, complicated styling tricks, or even a particularly ambitious mood. It quietly coexists with the rest of your life-grocery runs, lunch dates, walks around the neighborhood, and those days when leaving the house at all feels like a notable achievement.

It doesn't steal the show, but it gives everything around it a little more shape and intention.

Which, perhaps, is the real black magic of it: in a season where I'm craving softness and simplicity, it's a piece that meets me exactly where I am while still making me feel like myself.

Tee #2: Tie Dye Vintage

What is a vintage tee, really, if not something someone unearthed from their mother’s closet circa 1994 and decided to consign for approximately five times its original value.

One would think a grounded, sensible person would recognize such tomfoolery for what it is and simply walk away.

And yet, given the right combination of color, shape, and perfectly faded cotton, I fear I might do just about anything.

Including handing over my credit card with an alarmingly stupid smile stretched from ear to ear. I regret only that there were not two of these.

In fairness, this particular one had a few things working in its favor. A tie-dye wash that feels sun-faded rather than loud. A perfectly broken-in softness. And a semi-nude fairy who appears entirely unconcerned by the fact that one breast has made an appearance.

I paired it with the simplest possible things. Relaxed denim, worn-in sandals, and the kind of day where you are not trying to become a different version of yourself, just a slightly more comfortable one.

What can I say? Even in a season of sensible cotton basics, I still want a little bit of whimsy, albeit with a boob showing.

Tee #3: Relaxed Polo

A white cotton polo with a soft structure, silver buttons, and a subtle pattern at the collar that only really reveals itself when you’re up close.

I bought it, in part, because it felt neutral in the best possible way.

Some days the world feels overly soft, overly femme, all ease and drape and romance. Other days it swings in the opposite direction, into something more rigid, more structured, more defined. And neither extreme always feels like home.

This piece sits quietly in between.

It has enough structure to feel intentional, but not so much that it starts to feel performative. It reads as composed, but not corrected. Simple, but not stripped.

I like it for the days when I don’t want to lean too far in any direction. When I still want to feel like myself, just… centered.

It pairs easily with denim, linen trousers, anything that benefits from a little ease without collapse. The collar detail does most of the work. The rest is just showing up.

If the black tee is ease, and the fairy tee is delight, this one is balance. The kind you don’t notice at first, but end up returning to anyway.

Tee Time

Some days you need ease. Something that asks nothing of you and still feels like you.

Some days you need delight. Something slightly ridiculous that reminds you not to take yourself too seriously.

And some days you need balance. Something quiet and composed that simply helps you move through the world without friction.

Start there. The rest tends to take care of itself.
